Japan is a technological marvel. It appears as if Japan, Tokyo in particular, is light years ahead of the rest of the world in technological gadgets, one of which being the wireless router. Also known as the “pocket wifi,” this device grants internet access to multiple devices on the go: smartphone, smart tablet, laptop, etc. These devices are available for both rent and purchase and can be picked up and dropped off at most airports. This is not only the cheaper way to communicate in Japan, but also the most efficient. This method is used by locals and tourists alike.
Japan’s public transportation system is one of the most utilized in the world. Shinjuku Station, Japan’s busiest, has an average of three and a half million people passing through it every day. Cabs are available for increased fares and cars are available for rent, but most tourists join Japanese natives in maneuvering public transportation. There is a flat-rate foreigner-only rail pass for the JR, or Japanese Rail, that operates on all four main islands. There are two types of JR Passes:

It is your one-stop-shop for Japanese travel.
While English is still the dominant global lexicon, it is not as widely used by Japanese locals. We recommend downloading the Google Translate app prior to your arrival. Most important signs will have English translations or icons that communicate without words, but it’s best to have an automated translator at your disposal.
Pro Tip: print out the name of your hotel (and its address) in Japanese. This way, you can simply show it to your taxi driver and they’ll chauffer you home without a problem.
Despite Japan being a technologically savvy country, it has proved difficult for tourists to locate ATMs that accept foreign cards, even in cities as hustling as Tokyo. Make sure to bring cash upon arrival in Japan, check for ATMs in the airport, or search for one at a 7-11 convenience store. Many Japanese stalls will not accept your foreign credit cards.
Do yourself a favor and book a tour guide. These guides offer packages that include a rental car and a driver who will pick you up at your hotel lobby in the morning and drive you around the entire island, going only where you wish. Tour guides walk with you, offering extensive historical knowledge of each destination. They not only educate you on the past of Japan, but also the present. They explain certain customs and show you how to take off your shoes before entering a temple and how to say grace before eating a meal. These tour guides make a tourists’ trip to Japan much more authentic.
Appearing almost as if it’s out of a futuristic utopian novel, Tokyo has provided an epic tourist destination for many travelers. Technological gadgets aplenty, colorful karaoke bars, and seafood restaurants that range from holes in the wall to Michelin star establishments, Tokyo has it all.
A different city that uses all the same letters as Tokyo, Kyoto exudes a very different atmosphere. This former capital has been coined the country’s most beautiful city. With more than two thousand temples, shrines, and zen gardens, Kyoto is no longer the political capital, but has long since been the spiritual capital of Japan.
For history buffs, Hiroshima might be an educational stay. The history of this town is forever linked to the atomic bomb that leveled this city on August 6th of 1945. Now, decades later, the city was reborn into a bustling metropolitan hub. Pay respects at the Peace Memorial Park, visit the goosebump-giving A-Bomb Dome ruins, or sneak away to the nearby islands; there is a lot more to Hiroshima than what people already know.

The best time to visit Japan is the best time to visit Washington DC, and they are for the exact same reason: Cherry Blossoms! These sweet-smelling flowers are ideal for Instagram posts. Bundle up though, because they only blossom for a brief period during mid-January and early February.
For those who don’t prefer being bundled, the May to June months are also ideal. As Japan is quite a floral city, visitors can witness the landscape bloom into endless pastels during the spring season.
Flight times are relatively similar from both coasts of America. To Tokyo, a flight from LA is 12 hours. To the same city, a flight from NY is 14 hours. While of course there are shorter flights with more connections, consider selecting a long, business class flight to Japan to save time. This way, you’ll be comfortable on your long flight with extra leg room and complimentary services from the staff.
